Berlin boat tours in winter

The Spree does not close in November, but the timetable shrinks fast. Here is what still sails this winter, what the Christmas cruises cost, and why January is a different story.

Most visitors assume Berlin's river cruises stop with the first frost. They don't. From late November the big operators switch to short evening programmes with lights, mulled wine and the odd DJ, and one glass-roofed boat by the Cathedral keeps its regular hourly loop going until New Year's Eve.

Then it goes quiet. This post sets out what we found on the operators' own pages as of October 2026, from November 2026 to the end of February 2027.

The quick answer

Regular cruises run into December: Reederei Hadynski's heated 1-hour boat sails until 31 December 2026 and restarts on 6 March 2027. Stern und Kreis runs a winter city tour from Friedrichstraße from 20 November to 20 December 2026 (Friday to Sunday, from EUR 29.90), plus mulled-wine and Christmas party cruises. January and February are close to empty, and ice can stop all traffic.

Do Berlin boat tours run in winter?

Yes, until the end of December. After New Year almost every public sightseeing cruise in the centre stops until March.

Winter on the Spree has two halves. November and December are short but lively: fewer departures, earlier darkness and a programme built around the Christmas markets. January and February are the off-season proper, and the operators we follow publish no regular city cruises.

The table sums up what each operator lists as of late October 2026. The boats are heated on some of them, not all, and the piers in Mitte are mostly reached by stairs.

What is the Stern und Kreis winter city tour?

A 2-hour evening loop from Friedrichstraße past the lit-up centre, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 20 November to 20 December 2026, from EUR 29.90.

The winter city tour (C10) leaves the Friedrichstraße / Reichstagufer pier at 17:00 or 17:30. By then it is fully dark: in December Berlin's sunset comes before 16:00. The boat runs east through the Mühlendamm lock to the Nikolaiviertel, turns, and comes back past the Cathedral, Museum Island and the Reichstag to the Chancellery, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and the Spreekreuz. The round trip takes about 2 hours. A one-way option ends after 1 hour 15 minutes at Gotzkowskybrücke in Moabit.

Announcements on board are in German. Stern und Kreis' ticket listing on visitBerlin says audio guides in 11 other languages cost EUR 2 to rent, so bring your own headphones. Drinks and warm snacks are sold on board. The pier is reached by stairs only.

Is it worth it? For the lights, yes. For learning about Berlin, less so: you are looking at floodlit facades through cabin windows. If your trip falls outside these weekends, the regular 2-hour Friedrichstraße cruise covers the same government quarter in daylight while it still runs.

Winter departures leave after dark, so the TV tower and the Cathedral are floodlit.

Which Christmas and mulled-wine cruises are on in 2026?

Four: a 2-hour mulled-wine cruise from Friedrichstraße, a Christmas party cruise from Treptow, a heated solar catamaran with mulled wine, and the New Year's Eve trip.

All of these are seasonal products with their own prices. None of them is a guided sightseeing tour in the usual sense. Here is what each operator publishes:

Which sightseeing boats keep sailing until the end of December?

Reederei Hadynski's 1-hour cruise opposite Berlin Cathedral runs until 31 December 2026, with heated boats and a roof that closes in seconds.

Reederei Hadynski says its cruises run up to and including 31 December, that the boats are heated in the cold season, and that the next season starts on 6 March 2027. That makes the 1-hour bilingual cruise the most reliable winter choice in the centre. It is also the one with a live guide speaking English and German rather than a recorded track. Tickets are sold online and at the pier from about 30 minutes before departure.

The route is the classic Mitte loop: Museum Island, the Nikolaiviertel, the Reichstag and the government quarter. It does not reach the East Side Gallery. In December, take an afternoon slot: you get the buildings in daylight and the Christmas lights on the walk back.

Two others need a check before you plan around them. GoBoat's booking page lists rentals daily from 10:00 to sunset but no winter season, and the boats are open, with blankets. Solarwaterworld switches to a Christmas version of its Highlight Tour in November and December, so look at the calendar on the solar catamaran page before you count on a departure.

What happens to Spree cruises in January and February?

Most stop. Hadynski pauses until 6 March 2027, Stern und Kreis' winter programme ends with New Year's Eve, and a hard frost can freeze the waterways.

Plan a January trip on the assumption that there will be no sightseeing cruise. If one turns up in an operator's calendar, treat it as a bonus.

Ice is the other reason. In January and February 2026 frozen waterways made shipping in Berlin and Brandenburg "zeitweise unmöglich" (impossible at times), and Berlin's freight volume for the quarter fell by more than half, according to state statistics reported by In Berlin Brandenburg.

The river is still worth seeing. Our guide to walking along the Spree covers the riverside path from the Reichstag to Museum Island, which works in any weather and costs nothing.

A passenger boat waiting in a lock on a Berlin canal
The bridges tour passes three locks, and its Landwehr Canal leg is the part most often hit by works.

Is the Landwehr Canal open for boat tours this winter?

Not continuously. Construction closed it to the Stern und Kreis bridges tour from 13 October to 1 November 2026, and the tour ran a city-centre route instead.

Stern und Kreis announced that the bridges tour (C1) would not navigate the Landwehr Canal from 13 October to 1 November 2026 and would take an alternative route through the centre, still with a live guide. Stern und Kreis' visitBerlin listing gives 5 October as the start of the change, so the exact dates depend on where you look. Either way, the canal leg is what makes this tour special, with its locks and the iron bridges of Kreuzberg.

If the canal is the reason you want the bridges tour, check the route note on the booking page for your date. A booking with free cancellation up to 24 hours before lets you switch if the canal closes again. For the full picture of what each route passes, read our guide to the best boat tour in Berlin.
