Yes, you can walk along the Spree in Berlin, and in the centre it is one of the best walks in the city. The river links the Reichstag, Museum Island, the Nikolaiviertel and the East Side Gallery in a line of about 7 km. Berlin's own long-distance Spreeweg runs 63 km along the river right across the city.
Paths are not continuous everywhere. In Mitte, the district is still building the missing pieces one block at a time, and the first new stretch opened in June 2026. The routes below stick to the parts that work.
The quick answer
The classic walk runs from the Reichstag along the river to Museum Island and the Nikolaiviertel: about 2.5 km, 35 to 45 minutes. Add the East Side Gallery and Oberbaum Bridge and it is about 7 km to Warschauer Straße. The AllTrails loop through Mitte along the Spree is about 14.3 km. Ride a 1-hour boat one way and walk back, and you see each bank from both sides.

Can you walk along the Spree River in Berlin?
Yes. Through the centre there are riverside paths on one bank or the other for most of the way, and the signposted Spreeweg follows the river for 63 km.
The Spreeweg is route 1 of Berlin's 20 green walks. It runs from the Dämeritzsee at the eastern city boundary by Erkner, past the Müggelsee and Treptower Park, through Mitte past the Nikolaiviertel, the Humboldt Forum, the Cathedral, Museum Island and the Reichstag, then through the Tiergarten and past Charlottenburg Palace to Spandau, where the Spree meets the Havel.
Nobody walks all of it on a city break. The centre is the part worth your afternoon, and it splits neatly into two halves: government quarter to Museum Island, and Jannowitzbrücke to the Oberbaum Bridge.

What is the best walk along the Spree?
Reichstag to the Nikolaiviertel along the water: about 2.5 km past the government buildings, the Friedrichstraße piers, the Bode-Museum, the Cathedral and the Humboldt Forum.
Start at the Spreebogen behind the Reichstag and keep the river on one side. You pass the Bundestag buildings linked by footbridges, the Weiße Kreuze memorial to Wall victims, the boat piers at Friedrichstraße, then the Bode-Museum at the tip of Museum Island and Monbijou Park opposite. Cross to the Cathedral and the Lustgarten, then follow the water past the Humboldt Forum to the Nikolaiviertel.
Our map distances, walking at a normal pace:
| Stretch | About | On foot | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bellevue Palace to the Reichstag | 2 km | 25 to 30 min | Chancellery, House of World Cultures, main station across the water |
| Reichstag to Museum Island (Bode-Museum) | 1.5 km | 20 min | Bundestag footbridges, white crosses, Friedrichstraße piers |
| Museum Island to the Nikolaiviertel | 1 km | 15 min | Cathedral, Lustgarten, Humboldt Forum |
| Nikolaiviertel to Jannowitzbrücke | 1 km | 15 min | Mühlendamm lock, Märkisches Ufer |
| Jannowitzbrücke to the Oberbaum Bridge | 2.5 km | 30 to 40 min | East Side Gallery (1,316 m), riverside park |
| Oberbaum Bridge to Treptower Park | 2 km | 25 to 30 min | Molecule Man, Treptowers |
Distances are our estimates along the banks, not signposted figures.
Ride the river one way, walk back: the 1-hour Friedrichstraße cruise covers the same stretch from the water.

The AllTrails loop through Berlin-Mitte along the Spree is about 14.3 km and takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The short version, Reichstag to Nikolaiviertel, is about 2.5 km.
The AllTrails loop passes the Reichstag, Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral, Monbijou Park and the Märkisches Museum, mostly on paved paths. It is flat. Bring water in summer: shade is patchy in the government quarter.
If you only have an hour, do the Reichstag to Museum Island stretch and sit down on a boat at Friedrichstraße for the rest.

Can you walk from Museum Island to the East Side Gallery along the river?
Mostly, at about 4 km. The bank leaves the water in places between the Fischerinsel and Jannowitzbrücke, then runs well again past the East Side Gallery.
From the Nikolaiviertel cross to the Märkisches Ufer and follow it to Jannowitzbrücke. Beyond there, on the Mitte side, the riverside path is still patchy. The district finished its first new section of the Spreeuferweg, between Wilhelmine-Gemberg-Weg and the Schillingbrücke, and opened it on 26 June 2026, building the rest "step by step" (Bezirksamt Mitte).
On the Friedrichshain side, cross at the Schillingbrücke and walk the park between the East Side Gallery and the water to the Oberbaum Bridge. For the murals, switch to Mühlenstraße: the paintings face the street, not the river. More in the East Side Gallery guide.

Where does a boat fit into a Spree walk?
Use it to skip the dull or broken stretches, or to see the other bank. The 1-hour loops cover Mitte; the eastern trips cover the Oberbaum Bridge.
Walk the Reichstag to Museum Island stretch, then board the C4 hour at Am Weidendamm and let the boat show you what you just walked from the water. Or walk the East Side Gallery and take the solar catamaran from Stralauer Allee 3 back into the centre.
For a cheap crossing, the BVG ferry F11 links Baumschulenweg and Oberschöneweide across the Spree in the east on a normal AB ticket; it runs until 1 November 2026 this season (BVG). The Spreeweg uses it to cross to Plänterwald.

Walk to Friedrichstraße, then sit down for an hour: Museum Island, the Cathedral and the Reichstag from the water, with an audio guide in 12 languages.

The central stretches by the Reichstag, Museum Island and the Nikolaiviertel are lit and busy into the evening. Quieter parts in the east are better done in daylight.
The government quarter and Museum Island are well lit and patrolled, and the Spreebogen lawns stay busy on summer evenings. Some park paths further east are dark and empty late at night; stick to the street side there. Cyclists share many riverside paths, so keep right.
Can you cycle along the Spree?
Yes. The long-distance Spree cycle route reaches Berlin from Erkner and Köpenick, and many riverside paths in the city are shared with walkers.
Cycling covers the full 63 km of river in a long day. In the centre, ride slowly: the paths by Museum Island and the Reichstag are full of people at weekends. The F10 ferry from Wannsee to Kladow takes bikes and costs a normal AB ticket (berlin.de).

Too far to walk? The bridges tour covers the East Side Gallery, the Landwehr Canal and Mitte in one loop.
